Laranjeiras, Rio de Janeiro
Originally I was placed in a homestay at Copacabana. Two days before I was leaving I got switched to Laranjeiras. I was pretty bummed that I was not going to live in Copacabana…but now I really appreciate this lil town. Laranjeiras is a small middle class city located in Zona Sul. I live on a busy street where I wake up to cars and people speaking loud Portuguese in the morning. I just wish I could understand what they were saying haha!Today Alex and I explored a little more. We found a bunch of cute shops and even a mini mall!Food!!Food EVEYWHERE!!Picanha, frango, pastelitos, and every type of fruit you could think of. But what made me like this place even more was seeing Praça São Salvador so lively! (The picture above) I made a friend here who took me to dinner, pasteles de queijo are to die for!!And suco de maracuja!!After dinner we went across the st to the plaza where a live band was playing old Samba music! There was a lot of people!Gente bailando, cantando, drinking, simply enjoying the night. My friend told me that musicians come to play every Saturday night. And it is literally like 2 min down the st from me!I loved it!I attempted to dance some samba, he said I was a natural, but I think he was just being nice lol I had been waiting for a moment like tonight…I was surrounded by true carioças and Brazilian culture!
“You are such a natural…you belong here.Welcome home!”
